This quick "Pagkilala sa Bansa" lesson tackles the concept of a country. What is a country? Why is the Philippines a country? When can a place be considered a country? Worksheets are included to aid students in mastering konsepto ng bansa.
A simple definition of “country” is “an area of land that is controlled by its own government.”
In textbooks/modules used by DepEd, a country is defined as a place inhabited by people of similar cultural backgrounds, with the same or similar language, heritage, religion, and race.
A place can be considered a country if it has four elements:
tao (people)
teritoryo (territory)
pamahalaan (government)
Tao refers to the people who live in the area that makes up the country. They are also referred to as mamamayan (citizens).
They are considered the most important element of a country because they are the ones who will be seeing to the growth, development, and well-being of the country.
Territory refers to the geographic area — land, water, and air — that belongs to and is controlled by the country.
It is where the citizens of the country live and it is administered by the government of the country.
Government refers to the group of people who control a country and make decisions for it.
The DepEd textbooks define government as a political organization formed by the people in a country for the purpose of establishing order and maintaining a civilized society.
In the Philippines, the form of government is a democracy. In a democracy, authority comes from the people, who are the ones who choose the country’s leaders through the process of election.
Sovereignty refers to a country’s independent authority and right to govern itself.
There are two kinds of sovereignty:
Panloob na soberanya (internal or domestic sovereignty) refers to actual control over a country exercised by an authority organized within the country. In practical terms, this means that a country’s government can enforce its laws on its citizens and other people living within its territory.
Panlabas na soberanya (external or international sovereignty) refers to formal recognition of a country by other sovereign states.
Is the Philippines a country? Why?
Based on the definition of a country and the elements of a country discussed above, would you say that the Philippines is a country? Why or why not?
The Philippines is considered a country because it has people, territory, its own government, and sovereignty.
