Mga katulong sa pamayanan — community helpers in English — are people whose jobs keep our communities running smoothly. They provide us with goods and services that are essential to our health and well-being. We are able to survive, thrive, and live in the ways we are accustomed to because of the dedication of community helpers.

These are just some of the many katulong sa pamayanan, grouped according to what they help us with:
- Nutrisyon (nutrition): magsasaka (farmers), mangingisda (fishermen), kusinero (cooks)
- Kalusugan (health): doktor (doctors), nars (nurses), dentista (dentists), barangay health workers
- Kaligtasan (safety): bumbero (firefighters), pulis (police)
- Kalinisan (sanitation): kaminero (street cleaners), basurero (garbage collectors)
- Kaalaman (knowledge): guro (teachers)
- Transportasyon (transportation): tsuper (drivers), traffic enforcers
- Tahanan (homes): elektrisyan (electricians), tubero (plumbers), construction workers, utility workers
- Pangangailangan (needs): tindero (storekeepers), tagapaghatid (delivery people)
Some are in English because they don’t have an exact Filipino equivalent that I know of (or the translation would take up to 5 words, like traffic enforcer = tagapagpatupad ng mga batas trapiko).
Worksheets on Mga Katulong sa Pamayanan (Community Helpers)
There are already quite a few worksheets out there on mga katulong sa pamayanan but I thought it necessary to make my own for two reasons:
- I saw that people had searched for “katulong sa pamayanan ayon sa kasarian” — and I think that this classification by gender is something that should be discouraged! Why, are all nurses and teachers women? Are all police officers and firefighters men? Even if there are professions that are dominated (currently!) by a certain gender, I think the message that we should be sending to our kids is NOT that “boys do this and girls do that”. Instead, we should be telling them that gender is not qualification. Neither should it be a hindrance. We should serve the world — and help our community — the best way we think we can, according to our strengths and interests, not according to what chromosomes we happen to have. I wanted to create gender-blind worksheets for that reason.
- I also wanted to create a worksheet specifically about barangay health workers because they’re often overlooked but they have proved essential, especially now that we’re in the midst of a pandemic. I wanted our kids to be aware of them and the important work that they do for our communities.
