Kasarian ng Pangngalan: Filipino Lesson and Worksheets for Kindergarten and Grade 1-3

A quick Filipino lesson and four worksheets on mga kasarian ng pangngalan for kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Or write your own nouns in the bonus blank worksheet!

What is kasarian ng pangngalan? “Kasarian” means gender in Filipino, so kasarian ng pangngalan means the gender of a noun.

In Filipino, there are four noun genders (apat na kasarian ng pangngalan):

  • Panlalaki – masculine nouns
    • Examples (mga halimbawa): ama (father), kuya (big brother), tandang (rooster)
  • Pambabae – feminine nouns
    • Examples (mga halimbawa): ina (mother), ate (big sister), inahin (hen)
  • Di tiyak – nouns that don’t specify the gender
    • Examples (mga halimbawa): magulang (parent), anak (child), kapatid (sibling), manok (chicken)
  • Walang kasarian – nouns that don’t have a gender (neuter) – generally used for things, plants, events, and other nouns without a gender
    • Examples (mga halimbawa): bahay (house), puno (tree), baso (glass)

The kasarian ng pangngalan ng mga hayop (noun gender of animals) is generally the same as that for people. If the gender is clear (ex. stag or doe), classify it as panlalaki or pambabae; otherwise, it is considered di tiyak. (It’s not walang kasarian because it does have a gender — we just don’t know it.)

Abstract nouns such as pag-ibig (love) and kapayapaan (peace) are walang kasarian.

The kasarian ng pangngalan pagsasanay/exercises below are arranged from easy to a bit more challenging. The first one uses nouns that any kindergarten student can reasonably be expected to know, while the last one requires a slightly more expanded Filipino vocabulary, especially for kids whose first or second language isn’t Tagalog, and is best used for Grade 2 or Grade 3 students.

Aside from the interactive worksheets that can be answered right here on this page, each worksheet also can be printed out — there’s a link provided before each worksheet.

Finally, I also made a blank worksheet where you can write your own nouns that you want sorted into panlalaki, pambabae, di tiyak at walang kasarian (as pictured below). You can download that here: Kasarian ng Pangngalan: Free Printable Worksheet Blank (PDF)
