Montessori English Mastery Worksheets: Identifying Punctuation Marks
Punctuation marks are used to organize written text and make its meaning clearer and easier to understand. Question marks, for example, are used when asking for information. Commas are used to separate the items in a list. Apostrophes are used when putting two words together or to show ownership. A lot of times, a punctuation mark has more than one use.
The most commonly used punctuation marks in the English language are the following:
period or full stop .
comma ,
question mark ?
exclamation mark or exclamation point !
apostrophe ‘
quotation marks ” “
colon :
semicolon ;
ellipsis …
hyphen –
en dash –
em dash —
parentheses ( )
brackets [ ]
The proper use of these punctuation marks are whole other topics — and worksheets! — but for now let’s focus on simply identifying them.
