MTB Sinugboanong Binisaya

Build Your Bisaya Vocabulary: Numbers (Pag-ihap Gamit ang Pinulungang Binisaya)

Master Bisaya numbers with this quick lesson, free interactive/printable worksheet, and two multiple choice online quizzes.

We have two sets of numbers in regular use in Sinugboanong Binisaya (Cebuano).

The first set, which is more native to Cebu and the Visayas/Mindanao area, is mostly used for quantity.
Example: three books = tulo ka libro

The second set, which is influenced by the Spanish number system, is the one used for money and for dates.
Example: three pesos = tres pesos; January 3 = Enero tres

(In case you’re wondering, the Spanish influence is due to a couple of centuries of Spanish rule.)

For a person’s age, both the native and the Spanish-derived numbers are quite commonly used.
Example: 8 years old = walo ka tuig / ocho anyos

The use of the native numbers after 10 is less common in everyday life. In formal settings like in news reports and in the Bible, the native Bisaya numbers are still used. (In fact, the Bible was where I learned that twenty is kawhaan — when I was already 20-ish years old!) But in daily conversations, we usually just use the Spanish-derived set.
Example: Fourteen days = napulo’g upat ka adlaw / katorse ka adlaw
