Back when we were in Grade 3, we used to have to stand in front of our classmates and recite the entire multiplication table from 1×1=1 all the way to 10×10=100. It wasn’t just tiring, having to recite no less than a hundred multiplication facts, it was also a bit nerve-racking because of course you don’t want to embarrass yourself in front of your whole class. But while you could say it was quite an ordeal for an 8- or 9-year-old, having to do it that way also really forced us to learn. Now we don’t have to think too much before we give the answer to 7×6 – our mind immediately knows it’s 42.
Why is it important to master multiplication facts and division facts? There are several reasons.
Multiplication and division are life skills. We use it to figure out stuff like the bus fare for 3 people, or how long we can spend on each question if there are 30 items we need to answer in 1 hour, or the amount of money we’ll need to save every month if we want to be able to go on a trip during the summer break. It’s seriously one of the skills that we use every day of our lives and it will be so much easier for us if we can do it easily and quickly. Which leads us to the next reason…
When we have mastered something, it takes us less effort to do it. It’s like, if you haven’t mastered the skill of reading, then it would take you so much more time and energy to get through this sentence than you’re doing right now. You would have to concentrate on recognizing what the letter is, and then putting the sound of each letter of each word together, in order to figure out what the word is and what it means. But because you are actually able to read effortlessly, you can focus on understanding what it is that’s being said, the overall meaning of this whole paragraph. It’s the same thing in Math: when you can do the basic calculations automatically, you can use your mental energy on the trickier parts of a problem. And speaking of problems…
Multiplication and division are part of the foundations for more advanced Math. And by “more advanced” we’re not necessarily talking about differential equations or number theory, but even the lessons that you’re gonna be learning next school year. To be able to simplify fractions, find common denominators, or do basic algebra, you need to know your multiplication and division facts, otherwise you’ll always feel like you’re starting from scratch and have a big mountain to climb. Which also relates to the next point, which is…
“Math anxiety” vs. confidence. If you haven’t learned the basics, everything will feel like it takes so much work for you, and if everything feels laborious, then you will start dreading it and even hating it. A lot of kids fear Math simply because they just haven’t mastered the basics enough. Whereas if you can do simple calculations in your head, you feel more confident and you feel like you’re ready to take on bigger tasks and solve bigger problems.
In short, memorizing Math basics like multiplication and division facts is not about making it hard for yourself; on the contrary, you’re making it easier for yourself – more automatic, not requiring so much brain space – so that you can spend your energy on the things that are more important to you.
You can, of course, do it like we used to do: memorize the entire multiplication table and recite it from beginning to end. In fact, do that anyway, when you have the time. But to quickly test yourself and check if you have mastered those facts even when they’re not in order, you can use the worksheets below.
