Pang-abay vs. Pang-uri Worksheets

Quick lesson and free worksheets to help learners recognize whether a word is an adjective or an adverb (pang-abay o pang-uri).

If you are learning about pang-abay (adverbs) for the first time, you might want to take a look at this article first: Mga Pang-Abay at Pariralang Pang-Abay (Introduction)

Ang pang-uri ay salitang naglalarawan sa isang pangngalan o panghalip.
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun.

Ang pang-abay ay salitang naglalarawan sa isang pandiwa, pang-uri, o kapwa pang-abay. Kapag binubuo ito ng higit sa isang salita, ito ay tinatawag na pariralang pang-abay.
An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. If it is made up of more than one word, it is considered an adverbial phrase.

Both adjectives (pang-uri) and adverbs (pang-abay) are words that describe other words. The difference is in what they describe.

  • Adjectives (pang-uri) describe nouns and pronouns. Example:
    • Lumipad ang maliit na ibon. (The small bird flew.) – The word “maliit” describes the noun “ibon” so it is an adjective.
  • Adverbs (pang-abay) describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Examples:
    • Ang ibon ay lumipad palayo. (The bird flew away.) – The word “palayo” describes the direction of the verb “lumipad” so it is an adverb.
    • Ang ibon ay medyo maliit. (The bird is a bit small.) – The word “maliit” describes the noun “ibon” so it is an adjective. The word “medyo” modifies the adjective “maliit” — it describes how small — and so it is an adverb.
    • Talagang mabilis lumipad ang ibon. (The bird flies really fast.) – The word “fast” describes the verb “flies” so it is an adverb. The word “talaga” modifies the adverb “fast” — it confirms/affirms it — and so it is also an adverb.

The following worksheets help learners distinguish between an adjective and an adverb.
