Agusan del Sur is home to the Agusan Marsh, one of the most ecologically important wetlands in the country. The mountain ranges in the western and eastern portions of the province form a valley through which flows the Agusan River, the third longest river in the Philippines.

The province of Bohol is particularly known for the Chocolate Hills, a group of over 1200 conical karst hills with limestone from the Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene, and the Philippine tarsier, one of the smallest primates in the world. One thing you should know about the Philippine tarsier is that it gets stressed by things like camera flashes, being kept in a cage, and being touched — things that they are exposed to when they are “admired” by visitors — and unfortunately when tarsiers get stressed, they have a tendency to bang their heads against objects, which kills them. So: they may be cute and we may want to cuddle them, but we ought to adore them from a distance. They are not our toys!

The Tausug, the dominant ethnic group in the Sulu archipelago, are referred to as “the people of the current” (tau = person; sug = current) because of their deep connection to the sea. There used to be a Sultanate of Sulu, an independent state that ruled over the Sulu archipelago, parts of Mindanao, and parts of Palawan, as well as north-eastern Borneo.
