Montessori Geography: Biomes of the World (Lesson, Quiz and Worksheets)
An introduction to the different biomes of the world, plus an online biome quiz and worksheets to help reinforce understanding and gain mastery.
A biome is a type of environment that is defined by its climate and the types of organisms that live there. It is also described as a community of vegetation and wildlife — plants and animals — that live together in a particular climate and physical environment.
Scientists disagree on how to classify biomes, so don’t be surprised if you hear of the 5 major biomes on earth, the 6 major biomes, the 7 major biomes, all the way up to 10 major biomes. In some classifications, for example, freshwater and saltwater biomes are lumped together into one aquatic biome; some divide forest biomes into temperate, tropical and boreal (taiga). And then there are some scientists’ super-specific classifications of biomes that number by the dozens, where there are, for example, 12 separate freshwater biomes.
Regardless of how they’re classified — let’s leave that headache to the scientists ^_^ — what’s most important is to have a general idea of what biomes are and how they’re different from each other.
