Mga Pungway / Pulong Panghulagway (MTB Sinugboanong Binisaya Lesson and Worksheets)

Introduction to mga pungway (also called pulong panghulagway) and three free worksheets to help master adjectives in Sinugboanong Binisaya.

Pungway means adjective in Sinugboanong Binisaya. The term “pungway” is the shortened version (because Cebuanos are fond of shortening words whenever they can!) of “pulong panghulagway” which translates to “words for describing.” And that is exactly what adjectives are: words that describe nouns or pronouns (pulong nga naghulagway sa pungan o pulingalan).

There are several ways you can put together a noun (pungan) and an adjective (pungway) in Bisaya.

Sentence: “The bird is black.”

  • Word structure 1: panumbok (article) + pungan (noun) + pungway (adjective)
    • How to say it in Sinugboanong Binisaya: Ang langgam itom.
  • Word structure 2: pungway (adjective) + panumbok (article) + pungan (noun)
    • How to say it in Sinugboanong Binisaya: Itom ang langgam.

Phrase: “black bird”

  • Word structure 1: pungan + “nga” + pungway
    • How to say it in Sinugboanong Binisaya: langgam nga itom
    • Example sentence: “The black bird flew away.”
      • Nilupad ang langgam nga itom.
      • Ang langgam nga itom nilupad.
  • Word structure 2: pungway + “nga” + pungan
    • How to say it in Sinugboanong Binisaya: itom nga langgam
    • Example sentence: “The black bird flew away.”
      • Nilupad ang itom nga langgam.
      • Ang itom nga langgam nilupad.

As you can see, we’re not very particular about word order! The meaning somehow always manages to come across correctly.

(In the Spanish language, adjectives can also come before or after a noun. Apparently, the general rule is that adjectives that come before the noun express qualities that are innate to or naturally associated with the noun, while those that come after the noun tend to differentiate that noun from others. However, the same rule of thumb does not seem to apply to Sinugboanong Binisaya.)
