Pulingalan in English is pronoun. They are words that take the place of nouns.
Meaning of pulingalan in Sinugboanong Bisaya:
Pulingalan ang tawag sa mga pulong nga gamiton puli sa ngalan sa mga tawo, butang, hayop, lugar, o panghitabo.
This article and the three worksheets that follow focus on personal pronouns.
Just like in English, the pulingalan in Bisaya differ as to singular/plural (usahan/daghanan) and person (panawo).
- First person – unang panawo – ang tawong nag-istorya (the person speaking)
- Second person – ikaduhang panawo – ang tawong ka-istorya (the person being spoken to) (This is sometimes referred to as tawong giistoryahan, but the word “giistoryahan” could also mean who the conversation is about; “ka-istorya” is clearer as the person with whom the first person is having a conversation.)
- Third person – ikatulong panawo – ang tawong wala sa nag-istoryahanay (someone or something that the speaker is not addressing directly)
Unlike in English, which uses “we” for the first person plural, Bisaya makes a distinction according to whether or not the second person is included in the “we”:
- Kita – first person plural including the second person (inklusibo)
- Kami – first person plural not including the second person (eksklusibo)
Another difference from the English personal pronouns is that Bisaya has a separate word for second person singular and second person plural:
- Ikaw – second person singular (English: you)
- Kamo – second person plural (English: you)
Finally, English distinguises between male and female singular third persons (he/she), whereas there is just one word for a singular third person in Bisaya, regardless of gender (siya).
A lot of the personal pronouns in Bisaya are the same as the personal pronouns in Filipino/Tagalog.

This worksheet aims to introduce the beginner student to the concept of pulingalan (pronouns) by asking them to write about themselves. There are five statements and it would be tedious to keep repeating one’s name, thus the need for pronouns, specifically “ako” (I).

Mga Pulingalan: MTB Sinugboanong Bisaya Worksheet 2
This is a dialogue between a fox (singgalong) and a bear (oso), with a squirrel (laksoy) also present but not participating in the conversation. It introduces some but not all of the pulingalan (personal pronouns), as well as the concept of first, second, and third persons without going into detail (yet).

Mga Pulingalan: MTB Sinugboanong Bisaya Worksheet 3
This dialogue between a girl and a boy is similar to the dialogue between the fox and the bear in the previous worksheet. It is followed by a table laying out the different Bisaya pulingalan (personal pronouns) according to singular (usahan) and plural (daghanan), as well as to first person (unang panawo), second person (ikaduhang panawo), and third person (ikatulong panawo). The colors in the table correspond to the colors of the clothes of the people in the dialogue, to help the student associate the pronouns with the persons.
