Mga salitang pareho ang baybay ngunit iba ang bigkas at kahulugan refers to words that have the same spelling but are pronounced differently and have different meanings.

These words are sometimes referred to as homonyms but they are technically homographs, because many of them have different pronunciations and spellings. However, some of them are also homonyms (having the same spelling and pronunciation).

Here are a few examples of Filipino words that have the same spelling but different pronunciations and meanings:

ayos – okay / order

baba – chin / lower level

baga – ember / lungs

bago* – before / new

bait* – kindness / sense

baka – cow / maybe

baon – buried or deeply involved / pocket money

basa – read / wet

bilang* – as / number / quantity

daan* – hundred / way

dating* – arrival / coming across as, impression

gabi – night / taro

hamon – challenge / ham

huli – catch / last / late

kita* – income / visible

klase* – class / kind

lamang – advantage / ahead in points / only

likas – evacuation / inherent

lobo* – balloon / wolf

pako – fern / nail

pala – expression of a realization or discovery / shovel

palabas* – outbound / show

pito – seven / whistle

puno – full / tree

saka – farming / moreover / then

sama – bad / go with

sawa – had enough / python

saya – joy / skirt

sipa – kick / a traditional Filipino sport

siya – he or she (third person singular) / saddle

sulat – letter / writing

tabla – board or plank / tied (score)

tala – list / star

talon* – jump / waterfall

tanda – old age / sign

tapat* – faithful / honest / in front of

tayo – stand / we

tubo – interest / pipe

upo – bottle gourd / sit

The ones that have asterisks after them have the same pronunciation.

It would be quite simple to tell the word’s meaning if it was written with the appropriate diin (accent mark — see tamang bigkas ng mga salita.) However, writing with the diin is not strictly necessarily in Filipino, so the best way to tell the meaning of the word would be to use context clues.
