Topography: Mga Anyong Tubig at Anyong Lupa sa Rehiyon VII

There are plains, hills, mountains and volcanoes in Region 7.

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol is probably the most well-known geological formation in the region.

Osmeña Peak, Cebu’s highest peak at 1,013 MASL, is also one of its most picturesque and is part of the Mantalongon mountain range.

Volcanoes in Central Visayas include:

  • Mount Talinis, also known as Cuernos de Negros, stands at around 1,903 MASL in Negros Oriental.
  • Mount Kanlaon — an active stratovolcano that is the highest point in the whole Visayas Region at an elevation of 2,465 MASL — straddles both Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental.

As for bodies of water, the islands of Region 7 have many. The region is surrounded by seas, while its islands are separated by channels and straits. Inland, there are many rivers, lakes, and waterfalls, while bays are abundant in the coastal areas. Some of the most well-known bodies of water are:

  • Balinsasayao Twin Lakes
  • Casaroro Falls
  • Hagnaya Bay
  • Hilutungan Channel
  • Kawasan Falls
  • Lake Balanan
  • Loboc River
  • Tañon Strait

Industries and Livelihood

  • Mining. The mountains in the region are rich in mineral deposits such as copper, iron, carbon, manganese and limestone.
  • Farming. Tilling the soil is the primary livelihood in the plains. Negros is particularly known for its sugar cane fields, while the primary crop in Cebu is corn. Farms in Bohol produce sugar cane, corn, coconut, and tobacco.
  • Fishing. The primary livelihood in coastal communities is fishing.
  • The region also produces:
    • Guitars. Cebu — particularly Mactan — is a well-known exporter of high-quality guitars.
    • Food. Delicacies from the region include cashews, ojaldres, otap, mango products, pastillas de mani, peanut brittle, and rosquillos.
  • Tourism also contributes greatly to the regional economy. These are just a few of the tourist attractions in Central Visayas:
    • Magellan’s Cross (Cebu) – the cross erected by Ferdinand Magellan upon landing in Cebu in his circumnagivational voyage around the globe;
    • Chocolate Hills (Bohol) – a geological formation in Bohol consisting of over 1200 hills that turn brown in the summer, hence the name;
    • Apo Island (Negros Oriental) – a prime diving spot located off the coast of Dauin, Negros Oriental;
    • Cambugahay Falls (Siquijor) – a three-tiered waterfall with clear waters in the island of Siquijor.
